Juror’s Statement by Christopher Leitch The premise of The Grand Nude Show – study and exposition of the human form, in nauseating singularity like Freud, hearkening to a universal human vulnerability like De Staebler, discombobulating the objectifying sex-charged glance like Honig, celebrating sensuality unashamed, like Tom of Finland – is time honored and timely. My take on group show is more selective than inclusive. I think that smaller groups of stronger work make for more interesting shows. If there are many, many good works, that makes the job easier, but I have never been much on the A-for-Effort approach. In the instance of The Grand Nude Show, I would look for work that is stimulating in its entirety, not typifying the sexless anonymity of the mid-West or merely academically documenting the human form – of course, unless it’s like Wilbur Niewald who exemplifies the richness of and encourages clearer thinking about the science of vision.
